Meet the Press wasn’t on this morning because of Wimbledon. This got me thinking about my favorite Sunday morning shows. One have them has got to be Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Set in the fictional town of Wellsville, the show followed two brothers with the same name and their surreal, well, adventures.
And what adventures they had; with neighbors played by the likes of Iggy Pop, Steve Buscemi, Kate Pierson, and Debbie Harry, how could this show go wrong?
Although it might have been akin to a Twin Peaks for kids (complete with a vibe of hyperrealistic Americana), there was also a palpable longing for a of sense of community that doesn’t exist in the real world. A sweet, melancholy sentimentality was infused in each episode.
This is the opening. Theme song by Polaris.
I LOVE this show to no end. It’s one of my absolute favorites. I own the DVDs and it STILL holds up.
When Aaron and I were hired to write for that sitcom pilot, this show was a big inspiration behind my writing. It’s my favorite style of taking a real world and having fantastical and silly and strange things happen but it making sense within that world and it not being jarring and have it be extremely funny. I’m a HUGE fan of that style.
The Nightcrawlers episode is probably my favorite.Plus the music and guest stars were ALWAYS fantastic. It was my introduction to bands like Magnetic Fields and Velocity Girl (Not to mention Polaris. I mean, come on!).
Best.
Show.
Ever.
Hey Nickelodeon, release the 3rd season on DVD already. I’m annoyed at my sadly incomplete set.
