End Of An Era of the Day: Encyclopaedia Britannica, the mother of all alphabetized knowledge, will be putting its 244-year-old print business out to pasture effective immediately.

This makes the august encyclopedia publisher’s 32-volume 2010 edition the last of its kind.

I haven’t looked at a print encyclopedia in years. When we got a PC, the idea of having an entire encyclopedia instantly searchable at your fingertips seemed magical, like I was suddenly living in The Future. 

I researched papers in elementary school online, much to the confusion of my teachers, who had no idea if internet research was even valid - even if it was the exact same text that had been printed in that day’s newspaper. I had a 1996 Election Year Scrapbook full of printouts from the Ft. Worth Star Telegram that my 6th grade teacher wasn’t sure what to do with.

That said, I also grew up pulling random volumes from my parents’ Encyclopedia off the shelf to a random page and simply reading whatever page opened…

And that’s never going to happen to another person again.

Obviously, online sources like Wikipedia are always going to be more accurate, but this is a huge moment in the way people learn about the world around them. I guess I’m just stating the obvious.

I really enjoy creating alternate versions of the VHX logo as identity exercises. I realized that this version I created with a single line translated perfectly into neon. I’ve also discovered that neon signs are relatively cheap to get produced! Desktop background sized version here. More versions coming!
